Dear St Anne's Community,
This will be our last newsletter for Term 2. I am very grateful for our staff and students efforts this term. It has been a very busy one, with lots of extra-curricular activities intertwined with quality teaching and learning.
Naplan Reports
Today, we received access to the 2023 NAPLAN student summary report and new proficiency standards report. Print copies of individual student reports (ISR) and additional student reports (ASR) are expected to be sent to schools for distribution to parents and carers early in Term 3. I encourage you to read the detailed information sheet that can be found further along in this newsletter for more information about the new standards and changes to NAPLAN reporting.
Uniform
We have had to remind students of our uniform standards lately. Some students are taking their ties off as they leave school grounds or while waiting for the bus. It is important that the top button of the shirt is done up and the tie is sitting correctly. We also ask that students tuck their shirts in during winter. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.
Student's Reports
Semester 1 School Reports will be published via Compass on Thursday (29/6) next week. This will be for students in K-10. A letter will emailed to you on that Thursday, outlining how to access the reports on the parent portal. If your child's report sparks any questions or concerns, please make contact with their classroom teacher.
Enrolment applications
If you have a child starting with us next year, we encourage you to have your enrolment form completed online ASAP. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. I will be starting enrolment interviews next term and we are forward planning for 2024 classroom needs as well.
Tell Them from Me Survey
Thank you to everyone that completed the school survey recently. We had 63 people complete it and I look forward to reading through your feedback.
Spelling Mastery
Next term, our students in Years 3-8 will embark on a researched backed program to improve spelling results. Spelling Mastery approaches spelling through strategies, patterns and rules. The straightforward lessons in Spelling Mastery combine phonemic, morphemic, and whole-word instruction to make spelling easier to learn, leading the way to more effective writing. Spelling Mastery interweaves these three approaches according to students' skill development and provides lessons to help teachers efficiently and effectively teach the spelling skills students need to become proficient readers and writers. Explicit instruction, careful selection of spelling words, and repeated and cumulative practice help students master each concept and reinforce and retain key information. In just 15-20 minutes a day, Spelling Mastery helps educators to turn students into confident, strategic and successful spellers!
Study Tour
I have been fortunate enough to be accepted on a Study Tour to the UK during the next holiday period. Knowledge Society will be taking up to 25 senior Australian educators on a Science of Learning study tour to the United Kingdom from July 4 to 12 2023. I will have the opportunity to learn more about, and engage with, the UK experience of implementing evidence-based education and in particular the Sciences of Learning and Reading in the last decade. The outcome will be a more knowledgeable experience on how evidence-informed education system reform and school improvement can be implemented in Australia. Knowledge Society are curating a rounded program which includes conference attendance, school visits and engagement with experts in the United Kingdom. I look forward to providing you with a summary and findings report on my return.
I wish you and your families a safe and peaceful term break and we look forward to the students returning to school on Tuesday 18th July.
Take care,
Grant Haigh
Principal

On Sunday 25th June during Mass the parish will have the unveiling of a memorial plaque in honour of Fr Phil Harding. Afterwards everyone is invited to attend a parish BBQ. Meat and drinks will be provided. Please bring a salad to share. All are welcome.
Special Thanks are extended to the amazing Altar servers who volunteer to support the parish and school masses in a very selfless way. Your work and continued support does not go unnoticed. Year 3 have been learning about the early days of our colonial history. We have learnt about how tough life was in England, why convicts had to be sent to Australia and how life was for the new settlers in the new colony. We put ourselves in the shoes of the convicts and wrote letters to our families back in England, describing the trip to Australia and the differences between England and our new home. After printing our letters off we made them look old and weathered, as if they were 220 years old!!
Western Region Athletics success 2023
St Anne’s sent a squad of 26 athletes to Tumut last Friday to compete for Western Region selection. In foggy, miserable conditions, to start with, students did well to perform on the wet ground, but eventually the sun came out and made conditions much more pleasant.
The squad performed wonderfully to be beaten by half a point in the overall championship trophy!
Congratulations to the following students who will represent Western Region in Canberra next term: Livvy Blackwell, Kayla Block, Quinn Crawford, Ava Derrick, Annabelle Gray, Joey Guymer, Elsie Keith, Matthias Lancaster, Zephanie Lancaster, Ella McCrone, Grace McCrone, Nate Swanston. The junior girls relay won and also qualified consisting of Annabelle Gray, Zephanie Lancaster, Ella McCrone and Quinn Crawford. The senior girls relay finished second to also qualify, they were, Ava Derrick, Livvy Blackwell, Elsie Keith and Grace McCrone. Well done to all competitors and good luck to the athletes who will represent Western Region.
NSWCPS MacKillop Cross Country
Congratulations to Zephanie Lancaster and Annabelle Gray on their fabulous run at the NSWCPA Mackillop Cross Country recently.
Zephanie finished in 4th Place and Annabelle finished 6th place. Both earning a position on the Mackillop team to now compete at the NSWPSSA State Championships.
Netball NSW - Secondary Schools Cup
It was a great day at the NSW Netball Cup in Wagga last Thursday. A couple of our teams were close to making finals with most having a win throughout the day. A special thanks to the teachers, staff and students who put their hands up to umpire a game or five. We'll be back next year!
Wagga Wagga Youth Mental Health Forum
On the 6th of June, 7 students from Year 9 and Year 11 attended the Wagga Wagga Youth Mental Health Forum at Wagga Wagga Christian College. Approximately 200 students from around the region came together to discuss the importance of taking care of your Mental Health. Students engaged in a variety to activities to push them out of their comfort zone such as a speed dating style conversation with new people. The point of this experience was to highlight that often conversations are awkward but in the real world we need to have awkward chats, so the more we practise these the easier it becomes. Students heard from a panel of mental health experts including counsellors from Headspace and psychiatrists working in the public health sector, and were able to ask them any questions. In the final activity for the day, students from St Anne’s worked as a group to come up with some mental health initiatives we can run at school to help promote student well-being. Watch this space over the next 12 months as we take them from ideas to reality! Students conducted themselves with great maturity and even in the most uncomfortable of situations extended kindness and a smile to those around them. We look forward to returning with more students next year.
